Best fonts for a small business website with personality
See what one headline font changes across three UK business websites, without touching the logo, photos or copy.

Your cafe has character. Your salon has regulars who would never go anywhere else. Your consultancy certainly isn’t interchangeable. So why does your website feel like it could belong to anyone? Before replacing the logo or commissioning new photographs, try changing one headline font. We’ll compare three small-business websites with the same words, pictures and layout, then show which free font pairings add personality and which choices make prices, services and booking buttons work too hard.
Could one headline font make your website feel more like you?

The best fonts for a small business website should add personality without making customers work harder. These website font pairings are useful starting points, not rules for whole industries:
- Warm cafe: Fraunces headlines with Inter for the details.
- Editorial salon: Instrument Serif headlines with Inter for the details.
- Independent consultant: Bricolage Grotesque headlines with Inter for the details.
Webdesigner Depot’s 20 October 2026 independent-foundry feature puts expressive typography in the spotlight, but your website needn’t become a type exhibition.
Our framework is ‘One voice, clear details’. The headline supplies character; body text, service names, prices, navigation and buttons help people act. A £38 haircut still needs an easy-to-find booking button.
Display fonts are typically intended for larger, shorter text; body fonts must sustain longer reading at smaller sizes. Google Design’s guidance on choosing web fonts considers both text length and intended reading size. A serif isn’t automatically unsuitable for body copy, and no category guarantees accessibility.
Our visual experiment uses three fictional businesses: Maple Street Cafe, Fold Salon and Rowan Consulting. Each appears before and after at desktop and mobile widths. The baseline is competent Inter, not a deliberately awkward “before”.
Within each pair, copy, photography, crop, logo, colours, spacing and layout rules stay identical. So do headline size and weight: only the main headline font family changes. Natural wrapping changes remain visible—because an extra line matters on a phone.
The same principle applies across our portfolio of complete websites: typography belongs alongside photographs, content and useful journeys, not just isolated alphabet samples.
Give a cafe warmth without making the menu harder to read

For cafe website fonts, try giving the welcome a little character while leaving the useful bits alone. Nobody should have to decipher lunch.
These original Moss Lane Cafe specimens change just one thing: the hero headline. Before uses Inter throughout; after uses Fraunces 600 for that headline, with Inter keeping every practical detail clear.
To my eye, Fraunces feels warmer and slightly bookish here. That is a design judgement, not evidence of more bookings. The counter photograph supports the mood; the matched page comparisons show what the type actually changes.

- Starting settings, not standards: hero 56px desktop, 36px mobile; body 18px with 1.5 line height.
- Font availability: Fraunces and Inter are in Google’s font repository under the Open Font License.
- Skip this pairing if your identity is deliberately sharp and minimal, or you want expressive lettering across the entire menu.
Make a salon feel considered without hiding the services

For fictional Alder Hair Studio, Instrument Serif gives the headline a quieter, editorial feel—to my eye, anyway. Salon website fonts should still make finding a cut and its price effortless.
These full-page specimens keep the photograph, copy, colours and spacing fixed within each screen size. Desktop pairs the hero with the photograph; mobile stacks them above the service cards.

Specimen settings: headline 60px/66px desktop and 40px/44px mobile, weight 400 in both versions; supporting text Inter 18px. Only the hero’s font changes. Google’s repository lists Instrument Serif’s regular and italic styles at 400: no pretend bold.
Keep service cards, long treatment descriptions and every booking label in Inter. On mobile, let the full colour-service name wrap; never truncate the price or booking action.
Reject this direction if the fine strokes feel uncomfortable at the intended size, the brand is exuberant rather than restrained, or it replaces an already recognisable type system.
Help a consultant stand out without dressing up as someone else

Bricolage Grotesque could suit an approachable independent adviser: distinctive without looking like fancy dress. If an established, formal identity already communicates the right thing, keep it.

Compare the headline, not a different business
Before uses Inter throughout. After changes only the hero to Bricolage Grotesque 600, available in Google’s repository under the Open Font License. Keep its box dimensions and weight unchanged: 56px desktop, 36px mobile. Everything else stays Inter.

Independent shops need the same test: a long product name, price and purchase button, not just the shop name. Visual character cannot create credibility; genuine reviews and testimonials provide supporting evidence.
Check the small screen before choosing the winner

Preference: which specimen feels like your business? Practical checks: can customers read prices, understand services and use buttons? The best fonts for a small business website need both.
Google Design distinguishes display type from sustained reading. Your characterful headline face needn’t appear in service lists.
Start body text at 18px, then test the actual font: that’s a starting point, not a WCAG minimum. Following USWDS typography guidance, keep running text left-aligned, with at least 1.5 line height for longer passages. Aim for roughly 66 characters per line on desktop; don’t squeeze that measure onto phones.
- Small screens: inspect every page at 390px and 320 CSS pixels wide.
- Text enlargement: enlarge text to 200%. Check that no content or functionality disappears.
- Reflow: test ordinary vertically scrolling content at an effective 320 CSS-pixel viewport, commonly 1280px at 400% zoom. Reading shouldn’t require horizontal scrolling. This is a separate test from 200% text enlargement.
Test card: put these examples into the three specimens, alongside their buttons.
- Cafe: Roasted squash, goat’s cheese & caramelised onion sourdough — £12.50. Button: “Order lunch”.
- Salon: Full head highlights, toner, cut & blow-dry — £145.00. Button: “Book full highlights”.
- Consultant: Small business website review package — £295.00. Button: “Enquire about a review”.
Check £ signs, decimal prices, apostrophes, complete labels and usable buttons. Allow natural wrapping, flexible card and button heights, and stacked price rows. Never fix overflow by hiding words or shrinking text.
These specimens aren’t browser-tested pages, and this checklist isn’t a complete accessibility audit. Our web design process explains how reviewed mockups become responsive pages.
Choose the smallest change worth making

The best fonts for a small business website aren’t always new ones. If your site already feels like your business, leave the type alone. There’s no prize for replacing a perfectly good font.
All the website font pairings proposed here have a £0 font-licence route through Google Fonts, whose open-source fonts can be used commercially. Implementation time is a separate cost. Retain the supplied licence files and load only the styles you actually use; free or variable doesn’t automatically mean fast.
Try this next: save your current homepage, then trial one pairing on a duplicate, not the live page. Ask: does the business feel more recognisable, while every practical detail stays clear? Check opening hours, service descriptions, prices and booking links—not just the lovely headline.
At cloudline design, existing-site help starts from £30/hour, with scope determining the total. A new Starter website is £349; that isn’t a £349 typography refresh. If you need more than a font change, see our website packages and prices.
- Identity already works? Keep the current type. Familiar can be right.
- Page feels anonymous, but the structure works? Trial one headline face before changing everything.
- Menus or descriptions are difficult to scan? Improve hierarchy and spacing first: clearer headings, sensible gaps and readable text.
- Navigation, imagery and booking flow need attention too? Consider wider design help rather than asking a font to do every job.
Not sure which applies? Let’s talk it through in a free website consultation.
Final thoughts
You do not need a drawer full of fonts to give your website character. Choose one headline voice, keep the practical details clear and compare the result using your own longest service names and prices. If the new version feels more like your business without making customers work harder, you have a useful direction. If you would like a second pair of eyes, cloudline design can help you decide whether a small typography refresh or a wider website change makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best font for a small business website?
There is no single winner. Start with the jobs your text needs to do: introduce the business, explain services and help customers act. Our proposed shortlist pairs Inter with Fraunces, Instrument Serif or Bricolage Grotesque for headlines. Choose the version that fits your identity, then test real content on mobile.
What are the best Google Fonts for business websites?
For this guide, our shortlist is Inter for supporting text, with Fraunces, Instrument Serif or Bricolage Grotesque as a possible headline partner. These are proposed design directions, not a ranking. Google Fonts provides open-source fonts for commercial use, so the font licence need not consume your website budget.
How many fonts should a small business website use?
Our practical starting point is one family, or two when a distinctive headline genuinely helps. Keep body copy, prices, navigation and buttons consistent rather than giving each a different voice. This is a restraint rule, not an accessibility requirement. An existing single-family identity may already do everything your business needs.
What size should website text be on mobile?
Try 18px for body copy as a starting point, then judge the actual font and layout. That is our design recommendation, not a WCAG minimum. Longer passages benefit from generous line spacing. Also check that text can enlarge to 200% without losing content or functionality.
Can changing a website font replace a full rebrand?
Sometimes a headline change is enough to make an anonymous-looking page feel more personal. It will not repair an unclear offer, poor photographs or a difficult booking journey. Keep the existing logo and colours during your trial, and leave a recognisable identity alone if the new font simply makes it less consistent.
